Hewitson Limited delivered the full groundworks package for the new North Shields Transport Hub, working with Willmott Dixon on behalf of North Shields Council. The scheme formed a key element of ongoing town-centre regeneration, creating a modern, efficient travel interchange to improve connectivity for the local community. 

Our scope included extensive Section 278 works, requiring proactive pedestrian management and controlled access to ensure public transport services could continue with minimal disruption. Restricted working areas and tight interfaces, particularly around bus operations, demanded careful planning and flexible delivery. 

To maintain service continuity, a programme of nightshift working was introduced for key activities, allowing essential work to be carried out safely while minimising disturbance to passengers and operators. 

The project aligned with strong Net Zero ambitions, focusing on reduced-carbon construction methods and wider sustainability outcomes. Its successful delivery contributed to the development receiving multiple awards for design, sustainability and community benefit. 

The new Transport Hub provides a high-quality gateway for North Shields and improves public realm and travel experience within the town centre.
