Project: Morpeth Leisure
Client: Northumberland County Council
Main Contractor: Willmott Dixon
Value: £3 Million
Working alongside Willmott Dixon to deliver a great project, Morpeth leisure Centre consisted of a full groundworks package including Pool Tank Construction , suspended slabs / soffits , plenums , Radius Retaining Walls, and no dig construction due to tree roots and challenges of working adjacent to the River / flood plain
The Challenge
Restricted access for lifting of formwork to allow the steel frame and upper floor construction to progress, TPO’s therefore no dig zone, Working in close proximity to Wansbeck River.
The Solution
To overcome these challenges, Hewitson Ltd implemented innovative solutions and meticulous planning. An 8-ton excavator was employed as the lifting device for formwork and the construction of the pool tank walls. Upon completion, a temporary works design was prepared, including a scaffold ramp, to safely track the excavator out of the pool through a window opening.
No-dig methods, including the use of Cellweb, were utilized to protect the tree roots within the TPO zones. Detailed Risk Assessment Method Statements (RAMS) and licenses were agreed upon with the Environment Agency to ensure compliance while working within the flood zone.
