Hewitson Limited supported Wates in the construction of the new Highlight Leisure Centre, a major community development located on Hartlepool Marina. Delivered over a 100-week period, this £6.1m package formed a key element of the wider coastal regeneration programme. 

The scheme involved extensive groundworks, beginning with bulk earthworks and progressing into a large volume of reinforced concrete structures. A major component of the works included the construction of three new swimming pools, complete with balance tanks and pump pits. The coastal location introduced additional technical challenges, including live outfalls to the sea, complex groundwater management and working around sheet piles. 

Our scope also included 8,000m² of external works, incorporating hard landscaping, retaining walls and the installation of a foul pumping station. Upper-floor slab construction formed part of the superstructure support, requiring careful sequencing and coordination with the wider project team. 

The delivery required strong technical understanding and close collaboration with designers and stakeholders from the outset, ensuring details could be finalised efficiently and that construction sequencing responded effectively to site constraints. Despite the challenges, the package was delivered to a high standard, contributing to the successful creation of a landmark multipurpose leisure facility for Hartlepool.
