Hewitson Limited worked alongside Wates Construction to deliver the full groundworks package for Teesside University’s Digital Life development in Middlesbrough. Completed over a 27-month period, the works formed part of the university’s continued investment in modern, technology-focused teaching and research facilities. 

Our scope covered all major groundworks elements, including pile caps and ground beams, the formation of drainage networks with attenuation tanks, and the construction of ground floor slabs. Further works included installation of underground services and the delivery of extensive hard landscaping and street furniture to create a pedestrian-friendly public realm around the new facility. 

With the site surrounded on all sides by a live university campus, careful planning was essential to maintain safe access and minimise disruption to daily operations. Clear communication and structured logistics management ensured campus activities could continue uninterrupted while work progressed. 

The project was successfully delivered to a high standard, contributing to an important addition to the university estate and helping support its strategic growth in digital learning and innovation.
