The Challenge

Ashington Station marked the first phase of the Northumberland Line Project and was Hewitson Ltd’s inaugural project with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure under Network Rail conditions. The project involved constructing a new platform using precast walls and developing a new car park. Initial earthworks were particularly challenging due to the discovery of a World War II unexploded ordnance (UXO), alongside navigating Network Rail rules and handling contaminated material.

The Solution

Hewitson Ltd addressed these challenges with a structured and adaptable approach. Upon discovering the WW2 UXO, the team promptly followed established procedures for safety and compliance, ensuring the site was secure and mitigating any risks. The management of contaminated materials was handled through meticulous planning and implementation of a Materials Management Plan (MMP) and proper segregation practices. This ensured that all work met safety and environmental regulations while maintaining project momentum.
