Highlight Leisure Centre, Hartlepool
We've recently completed our £6.2m groundworks package at Highlight Leisure Centre for Wates and Hartlepool Council. The scheme includes three pools, a gym, fitness studios, soft play and café facilities set within a stunning marina location. Our package covered foundations, drainage, pool tank construction and externals — all delivered within an active waterside environment with no onsite water disposal.

Key challenges include working within a live marina environment with zero onsite groundwater disposal, requiring water testing, storage and removal by tanker throughout the works.

Our Story

From Agriculture
to Civil Engineering.

Hewitson Limited was formed in 2004 by Michael Hewitson after operating as a Partnership for many years. The company provides specialist civil engineering, drainage, concrete foundations and RC structures predominantly in the North East of England.

We are a family run business that has progressed from an Agricultural background. The Company now employs over 200 individuals of various trades and professions. We pride ourselves on having a low turnover of staff, and promotion within the company is encouraged wherever possible. A 'hands on' approach is adopted from senior management level and below.

Our aim is to provide long term permanent employment for our locally sourced workforce. A large percentage of our workload is obtained through repeat business — a testament to the high level of service our clients have come to expect.

Community Impact
On schemes such as Callerton Academy and North Shields Transport Hub, we worked with residents and the council to minimise disruption, provide offsite parking solutions and engage with the community throughout construction.
Net Zero Commitment
On the North Shields Transport Hub we achieved Net Zero status — using electric equipment, tight material approval processes and collaborative meetings with the council and highways to minimise environmental impact.
